Temporal Arteritis

Comprehensive Medical Consult on Temporal Arteritis

The cause of temporal arteritis – also known as giant cell arteritis or cranial arteritis- is not yet known.

A characteristic of the disease is a very strong headache, which is oftenlocalized at the temporal area. The pain may occur at rest or during chewing. In 15% of the cases, patients describe blurred vision. These symptoms are produced by an inflammation of the temporal artery. Apart from the temporal artery, other arteries in the body may also be affected.

The disease is a rheumatic disease, it is closely associated with polymyalgia rheumatica, which is more common than temporal arteritis.

Those affected have new questions to the disease and treatment:

  • What is meant by temporal arteritis?
  • Are there different forms of the course?
  • Can the disease be cured?
  • What symptoms can occur?
  • How is it diagnosed?
  • Which accompanying symptoms can occur?
  • What tests or examinations must be carried out?
  • What laboratory data are important?
  • What do the lab results say about the course of my disease?
  • What medications are useful?
  • Cortisone – is it necessary?
  • What are DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs) ?
  • What side effects can I expect?
  • Which control examinations are useful?
  • How will it go on?
  • Are there any new treatments?
  • Where can I find a specialized center?
  • What can I do myself?
