Diabetes mellitus

Comprehensive Medical Consult on Diabetes

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a metabolic disorder in which, elevated blood glucose levels can be measured in the blood. The cause is a lack of insulin or a decreased effect of insulin to the body cells. In Germany at least 5% of adults are affected by this disease. Mild Diabetes often causes little or no symptoms and therefore may remain undetected for long.

The disease can cause changes in many body organs long before its discovery, which is mostly a coincidence, and  mainly damage the small and tiny blood vessels. The resulting circulatory disturbances lead to the feared consequences of diabetes: the damage to the eye vessels may cause limitations of vision and even blindness, diabetes mellitus is the most common single cause of kidney failure  and therefor the most common cause of dialysis in Germany, poor circulation in the feet and legs enhance the risk of a necessary amputation. Diabetics often suffer from impaired wound healing. In addition, diabetics often have high blood pressure.

Diabetes is a serious disease and needs treatment. Depending on the severity it will be treated with diet, tablets or insulin. The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus always means that a significant change of daily habits is necessary.
